This page outlines the issues related to the content that you may use in your lessons now and how you may use this and other content for elearning.

It is very important when developing content to remember that copyright requirements apply to the online environment in a similar way to all other means of using other people's work. You can check out requirements at Copyright Kitchen, Copyright Council or IP Australia.
If in doubt assume full copyright requirements are in force.

Note also that many wikis including this one are copyright under Creative Commons which is an open source attribution licence slightly different to the usual copyright requirements. The link to detail about Creative Commons is at the bottom of every wiki page.

File Types

All content will be stored in electronic files. Awareness of the common file types used is helpful in ensuring that the most effective type is chosen for a particular use. A list of these common file types is provided on the File Types page.

Content Types


Content could be grouped in the following ways:

  • Text - all forms of text based material
  • Audio - voice, music or other sounds
  • Images - still images
  • Video - moving images with sound
  • Multimedia - a combination of images/video, audio and text



Sources of Content

Content can be produced from scratch, copied from existing material, linked (as in a website), sourced from resource sites (eg LORN) or assembled from components from all these sources. Some online resources are listed on Resource Links.


A brief outline of different methods of producing your own content are outlined below along with links to support material for more detail.
These descriptions are intended to describe possibilities and major steps in the process. Use the links to find more detailed information on how to use equipment or software.


Production of Content

The brief descriptions below suggest ways of modifying existing content or creating new content. Where relevant the available software for the purpose is identified. Some help with resources for content can be found on MyLearning
(note: this link will not work when using a computer external to Sydney Institute network)

To help with production of content you can borrow the elearning Resource Kit from the Library.

Text

Use existing electronic documents - for example MS Word, Adobe Acrobat(pdf)
Scan existing paper documents - requires a scanner and appropriate software
Link to text in websites - use the linking ability of elearning software to point to existing material online
Convert voice to text - Dragon Naturally Speaking software for voice controlled typing converts your voice directly to text
Type directly into wiki, moodle or blog


Audio

Use existing voice or music recordings - tape recordings can be digitised by connecting to the computer sound input socket.
Use Audacity software to record from a device (eg cassette tape player) connected to your computer
Record voice or music - use an mp3 recorder (eg iPod) to record and then load to a computer
Record voice or music - Use Audacity software to record from microphone or CD player in computer
Edit digital voice or music recordings using Audacity



Images

Scan existing images such as photographic prints, images in books or magazines
Digital camera for photographing new images or as an alternative to a scanner (camera tips)
Edit with Microsoft Photo editor or Photoshop
Save as file
Upload to Powerpoint, wiki, website, web gallery

Images may also be presented with audio using 'Digital Storytelling' with software like Microsoft Photostory. This software allows a sequence of images to be played with animation effects and audio, either voice, music or both. This can be quite effective for a short story or desciption of a task.

Video

Copy existing video tape to DVD (requires special input unit for computer or a DVD recorder connected to a VHS video tape player)
Save existing video as digital files
Use video function in digital still cameras (short video)
Use digital video camera for longer or high quality video
Use video editor such as Adobe Premier Elements to add titles, edit and save in different formats
Upload suitable format to wiki, website, webgallery (eg TeacherTube)

Multimedia

Multimedia is a combination of the above. Content produced as above may then be compiled into a complete package:
Use software like Powerpoint to compile a basic multimedia package


Linking to Content

A hyperlink can be used to connect the learner with a website, wiki, blog or any other internet location that holds the material of interest.
The hyperlink could be provided in an email, listed on a wiki or listed in a document that is printed and given to students. A hyperlink may provide the location of a website (the website location is known as a URL) or provides a connection to a particular place on an internet page.

An example of a URL is http://www.google.com.au This can be clicked on this page or copied into a web browser to go to the google website.

A link can be made by using words for example Google or using a picture:

Each one of these examples when clicked goes to the same location.


Sourcing from Resource Sites

There are many sites that provide resources for teaching. Resources could be content or help with "how to do it". Some resources are, for example, 'learning objects' or material made available by a teacher on the internet that could be used by other teachers (many formats). A learning object is a discrete component of a competency that could be used as is or modified to suit a particular purpose and which is generally packaged in a standardised form.

Teacher Tube - the teacher equivalent of UTube; educational videos made by teachers and students

LORN - Learning Object Repository Network, a database of learning objects created by the Australian Flexible Learning Framework
Flexible Learning - Australian Flexible Learning Framework, A source for case studies of flexible learning but also a lot about methodology with flexible learning. There is also a useful Resource Page on this site.
CLI - Centre for Learning Innovation. Learning Resource materials including learning objects. Much material is shared in TaLe.
TaLe - Teaching and Learning exchange - provides an exchange point for material developed by Australian teachers in TAFE and schools.
